Projects will address increased traffic related to BRAC at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett announced the approval of nearly $90 million dollars worth of transportation projects to address traffic congestion in Bethesda. The funds were awarded by the Office of Economic Adjustment, an agency of the U.S. Department of Defense. (Source)
 

Tuesday, November 01, 2011 - MID-ATLANTIC FEDERAL CREDIT UNION CREATES A POSITIVE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT WITH COMMUNITY SHREDDING EVENTS (Mid-Atlantic Federal Credit Union)
Mid-Atlantic Federal Credit Union (MAFCU) received an environmental impact certificate which includes the savings realized by recycling the shredded material that was generated through their community shredding events during 2011. The shredding events generated 30,000 pounds of paper. The figures listed represent the environmental savings realized by recycling the shredded material: 61,501 kilowatt hours of electricity, 255 trees, 900 pounds of air pollution emissions, 10,230 gallons of oil, 50 cubic yards of landfill space and 105,000 gallons of water. Tuesday, October 18, 2011 - DISASTER VICTIMS GET RIDES FROM BARWOOD (Barwood Taxi)
Through a new partnership with the American Red Cross, Barwood will transport local disaster victims to safe havens in their time of need. The organization provides food, shelter and clothing but not transportation. "We're thrilled that Barwood made this donation. It helps the Red Cross provide a better-rounded package of assistance," said Disaster Relief Coordinator Jennifer Kurtinitis. Last year, the Red Cross of the National Capital Region aided 600 families, including about 60 from Montgomery County, in the wake of disasters, mostly house fires. The partnership will help about ten families initially and may be extended.

To help inform residents and retailers about the carryout bag law (Bill No. 8-11) that begins January 1, 2012, Montgomery County has launched a new website, www.montgomerycountymd.gov/BAG. Under the law, all retailers will be required to collect 5-cents for each paper and plastic carryout bag provided to customers. Retail establishments retain 1- out of every 5-cents they charge for bags (tax-free). Proceeds from the law are dedicated to programs that fight litter and control stormwater pollution in Montgomery County. (Source)

Rescue Day was full of possibilities as visitors toured the squad's building in Bethesda. Despite the cold and pouring rain, a surprising number of people showed up for Taste of Bethesda on Saturday, munching their way with umbrellas and raincoats through food samples from nearly 60 restaurants. But with somewhere between 15,000 and 18,000 attendees (compared to the usual 35,000 to 40,000), it certainly wasn’t jammed packed, meaning no waiting in long lines and no bodily contact with complete strangers on the usually-teeming Woodmont Triangle streets. Monday, October 03, 2011 - CAR SHOW RAISES MONEY FOR CHILDREN'S INN (The Children's Inn at NIH)
The show hosted about 78 cars, trucks and motorcycles Saturday for an annual charity event held in conjunction with the Taste of Bethesda. Proceeds go to The Children’s Inn, a charity for children undergoing treatment for life-threatening illnesses and their families at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda. When the event started more than two decades ago, the group had only about 50 cars, but hosted a sock hop with a band and dancing along with the show, said one of the founders, Randy Schools.
